New Year's Diving

Several groups are planning to dive in the new year. For all of them, you must contact them to RSVP beforehand.

Aqua Center is planning to be underwater at the stroke of Midnight. They are meeting at the shop at 10:30pm and will feature champagne underwater at midnight, and a Post Dive at Aqua Center with hot food and refreshments. Hot showers will also be available after the dive.

Burlington Scuba is planning a dive January 1, meeting at Burger King at 9am. Dive is at White Beach Manchester by the Sea, MA. Contact the shop if you're interested.

Mass Diving is diving at Back Beach, on January 1, and are meeting at the Burger King at 9:30am. Must RSVP to mark@massdiving.com.

North Shore Frogmen , Finatics Dive club, and East Coast Divers have teamed up for a dive at White's Beach, and are looking for volunteers to dive and to help out. They are planning a hot chocolate on site, and post-dive party. Last year the Frogmen had 32 divers in the water! Visit their facebook page for the full details

Aquacenter's Frozen Turkeys Treasure Hunt Dive

This Sunday the Aquacenter Dive shop in Sandwich, MA will be having the treasure hunt at Sandwich Town Beach at 10:00 AM. The fee is $20.00, and all monies collected will be donated to the Sandwich Food Pantry

Food donations (canned, non-perishable) are welcome as well. Post-dive hot chili and ice cream will be served for all divers at Aqua Center, and also for anyone wishing to stay dry but still willing to donate $20.00.

There is a huge list of prizes, and everyone should go home with something.

The shop opens at 9:00 AM, the dive is at 11:00 AM, with the rising full moon tide high at 12:24 PM. You may register anytime between now and when we run out of food on Sunday, but you have to have your money in before the dive if you want to hunt and win prizes.

Officer Elections

Officer elections will be held at the November general Meeting. Most officers are re-running for their same positions, with the exceptions of two vacancies: membership director and boat dive coordinator.

Members can run for any position, but we are specifically looking to fill the vacancies. If you're interested in running (or know someone who is), email Rick at president@neadc.org

Tropical Fish Rescue 10/9/11

The rescheduled Tropical fish Rescue is this weekend, October 9, from 9:30am to 4:30PM at Fort Wetherill, Jamestown, RI

Divers in recent weeks have seen several Spotfin Butterfly, four-eye butterfly and a couple of cowfish and grouper. It looks like the area has recovered from the hurricane and the tropical fish have stayed off the coast

It's a great event for the whole family, we'll be seining, snorkeling and diving, as well as volleyball, music, silent auction, and great food!

Mark from Biomes of RI and Faith from DUI will be on site as well as other mfg representatives

We will have our tropical fish tank display, a nice BBQ, touch tank, music, volleyball and dive mfg's up on the hill--- Down by the coves we will be seignning, snorkeling and diving for the tropicals--we will have collecting nets available as well as instruction, dive buddies and holding tanks for all tropicals caught.

ALL PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT THE COTTING SCHOOL

26th Annual BSC Treasure hunt and Multi-club event

Tropical Fish Rescue CANCELED

With Hurricane Irene due to bring heavy wind and rains on Saturday, we decided to cancel the Tropical Fish Rescue.

Al Bozza is putting together another trip to Fort Whetheril to look for tropical fish on October 9th.

Tropicals are usually more abundant and larger at this time of year. Mark from Biomes of RI and Faith from DUI will be on site as well as other mfg reps. There will be a tropical fish tank display, a nice BBQ, touch tank, music, volleyball and dive mfg's up on the hill. Down by the water there will be seignning, snorkeling and diving for the tropicals. Collecting nets will be available as well as instruction, dive buddies and holding tanks for all tropicals caught.

GAFC: How it works!

Participants need to have a REEF Member # prior to the day of the event. A REEF member # is required in order to do a survey and then hand it in to get a raffle ticket. The process is painless:

Becoming a REEF member -- Click here to Join Reef and follow the directions on the site.

Already a member, but forgot your REEF member number? Click here to lookup your Member number. If the email lookup is not working, email data@reef.org and they can look up the number.

Most dives begin at 8 am, with Maine dives starting at 7am. Sites with Coordinators are listed below, contact Bob Michelson before July 30th to sign up for a dive:

After the dives, participants fill out their surveys, and meet at Stage Fort Park. The survey papers are handed in and participants get 1 raffle ticket. (1 raffle ticket / diver no matter how many surveys are handed in).The diver can choose what grand prize they wish to go for, only 1 prize per diver can be won.

There will be food and drinks for sale, as well as a touch-tank and many other activities. Water, lemonade, and ice tea will be available for free, bring your own water bottle to help the environment!

The surveys must be handed in by 1:30 pm, and the Raffle is drawn at 2 pm. The Grand prizes are pulled 1st followed by general raffle prizes drawn in order of descending value.

Photo contest for the 10th Anniversary of the GAFC

To celebrate the NEADC's 10th Great Annual Fish Count, we are printing a special edition shirt - designed by you!

We are looking for any photo of an iconic local fish to put on this year's shirt. The contest is open to all members, and everyone can submit up to two images no more than 10 mb each. It can be a photo of any local fish, including sharks. The winner's photo will be used for the GAFC T-Shirt, and the top 10 entries will be featured on the website and newsletter.

Submit all entries to newsletter@neadc.org.

The winner to be chosen by the membership, Bob Michelson and Holly Martel-Bourbon at the April meeting. We need to get the photos in asap. Deadline is next Tuesday, 4/19/11 by midnight.

Finatics Meeting - Lobstering in NH

Whale Watch

Join Al Bozza and the NEADC for an early Spring journey onboard the Voyager III for a day of seeking the great Rights, Humpbacks and Atlantic White-sided Dolphins on Stellwagen Bank. Voyager III is the whale watch vessel of the New England Aquarium and is crewed by knowledgeable and enthusiastic naturalists who will identify and provide information on the species we will see. They also conduct an informational tour as we motor out of Boston Harbor. The Voyager III is equipped with educational materials including a computerized fluke identification station, Loran and chart station, live-well and whale biofacts. Price includes a group photo.

When: Saturday, April 30, 2011 MEET at 10:30 a.m.; Boat departs 11:00 a.m. Boat returns between 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Where: New England Aquarium, Central Wharf. Meet in front of the Whale Watch Kiosk on the Aquarium Plaza at 10:30 a.m.

What to Bring: Lots of warm, weather resistant clothing and water-proof no-slip shoes. The weather can be wet, wild and cold on Stellwagen even if it is warm and sunny dockside so bundle up!
Food service available on board or you may bring your own. (NO GLASS or ALCOHOL, please) Binoculars, Camera and LOTS OF ENTHUSIASM

Sea sickness preventative is HIGHLY recommended

Tickets: Tickets are Adults - $36.00; Children (under 18) - $26.00 (children must be at least 3 yrs. old and 30" tall); and must be paid with reservation.

January General Meeting at NEAq Cafeteria

The January General meeting will be held at the Aquarium Cafeteria, and will feature a presentation by Mark Potter about diving in Fiji

Mark's presentation will include travel details, information about the islands, observations about the people and accommodations…and of course a wealth of underwater photos.

Mark Potter is the owner of MASS Diving in Natick. He has been a certified scuba diver since 1980 and a PADI instructor since 1986. Mark has more than 3500 dives to his credit, and is also an avid destination diver leading about five exotic group trips each year.

SCUBA, Marine Biology and the Bahamas for High School Students

Applications due January 14th!

The NEAq's Sea Teen Underwater Research, Training & Learning Expedition (Sea TURTLE) program is a great opportuny for teens who are interested in marine biology and conservation. It is geared towards students who want to learn how to scuba dive and experience and protect the beauty of the underwater world.

Students will begin by attending weekly classes at the New England Aquarium (NEAq) and a local pool. During April school vacation, they will travel as a group to Miami, FL and board the Research Vessel (R/V) Coral Reef II. We will travel down the Miami River and cross the Gulf Stream (while watching flying fish!) to the beautiful islands of Bimini, Bahamas. The Bahamas is a fantastic place to learn how to scuba dive because of its warm, clear water and colorful marine life. Students will use the skills they learned during the pool sessions to complete their PADI Open Water scuba certification in the Bahamas.

Although scuba certification is a primary goal of the Sea TURTLE expedition, there are many more. NEAq staff will lead interactive educational activities and give presentations on subjects related to marine biology, conservation, natural history and fish identification. We will also be visiting the Shark Research Lab in Bimini, snorkeling in mangroves (fish nurseries) and conducting beach seines to compare species found in diverse habitats.

The program is open to High School Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and there will be an interview process to select students. Application is due by Jan. 14th

Aquacenter will submerge at Sandwich Town Beach around 11:50 PM December 31, 2010, and surface around 1:05 January 1, 2011. There will be an underwater toast and then warm up back at the shop. RSVP IS REQUIRED. More info at their website

Sea Rovers & Scalli Scholarship

The Boston Sea Rovers page has been updated with all the information about the new venue in Danvers. This year's clinic is March 4th – 6th and will have an on-site pool for discover scuba classes, FREE PARKING, and discounted hotel rooms.

Also, the Frank Scalli Annual Summer Internship is now accepting applications for 2011.

Immediately following graduation or the spring semester, the 2011 scholar will intern with members of the Boston Sea Rovers and associates located throughout the United States to experience a wide variety of jobs and career choices. Based in part on the personal interests ofthe scholar, the Internship will provide advanced dive training courses and ample opportunities to dive and train with a variety of dive professionals in abroad cross section of diving environments. Opportunities will include hands-on work with professional under water photographers and filmmakers, educational specialists, marine engineers and scientists, equipment manufacturer’s representatives, and dive shop owners.

Qualified graduating high school seniors and college freshman interested in pursuing underwater careers are encouraged to apply to the Sea Rovers by October 31, 2010.

Tropical Fish Rescue recap

We had a great day for the Tropical Fish Rescue. The water was a perfect 70 degrees - no hood or gloves required!

By the end of the day we had a fishtank full of tropicals, all of which went to good homes.

Thanks to the generosity of DAN (this year with a new all-time high donation valued at $870.00) and all of our other long-time sponsors, our fish counters raffle is now worth $7.856.53!! Everyone in attendance will go home with a raffle item worth at least $5.00!!

So far there are 104 divers registered. The final list of dive site coordinators is up, dives start at 8am, except Nubble Light which starts at 7am. Remember, in order to participate, you must be a member of REEF, and preregister with Bob Michelson before the event.

Pre-meeting social at the Reef

Summer is here, so we've moved the pre-meeting social to The Reef, the seasonal open-air restaurant on the Aquarium Plaza before the next General Meeting. Anytime after 5:30 and there should be a few members hanging around. Stop by for drinks, appetizers, dinner, or just to say hi

These get-togethers are meant to help answer questions and talk with new or less active members. We’ll tell you about the latest club news and hear about your interests in diving.

Harpoon Brewery Time Change

The Harpoon Brewery Tour for July 14th has been changed to 7PM, due to a staff meeting at the brewery.

There is still time to sign up if you're interested, there are about 30 spots still available. This is not a meeting, just a social event. Friends and guests are welcome, this event is limited to 100 people.

The event takes place in their Tasting Room and includes in-depth information about Harpoon and the great beers they brew. This information is narrated by knowledgeable Harpoon staff and includes complimentary samples of beer. That Tasting lasts 1 1/2 hours and includes access to the Brewhouse Platform.

A selection of the 2009 Sundance, Toronto, and Seattle Film Festivals, and narrated by Ted Danson, this film delves beyond the surface of the seas to reveal a troubling truth beneath: an ocean increasingly empty of fish, impacted by decades of overexploitation.

Earth Day Beach and Underwater Cleanup ==RESCHEDULED==

For the safety of the Divers and the comfort of the Beachcombers, our Beach and Underwater Cleanup at North Hampton State Beach has been rescheduled for this Sunday, April 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you, but with 3 to 5 foot seas, rain, blowing winds and a high temperature that may not even reach 40ºF, it is unreasonable of me to expect that of anyone! While Sunday may not be perfect, it will at least be safe to dive and reasonable to spend an hour or two on the beach.

DIVERS TAKE NOTE: Discover Diving of Atkinson, NH has offered one free air refill to anyone who dives and cleans for this Earth Day event! Thank you Discover Diving!

EARTH DAY CLEAN UP PLANNED
Why?

Human activity is costing the earth. Despite the ocean’s vast expanse it is taking its toll on aquatic eco systems. But you can choose to make a world of difference by joining our Dive for Earth Day event.
This is your chance to get involved in a conservation activity and make a difference!

What will we do?

We will be collecting and removing trash from the beach, surrounding rocks and underwater. Trash bags and gloves will be provided and everyone is encouraged to get involved; divers and non-divers, young and old.

When: Sunday, April 18th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Event: Earth Day clean-up and trail maintenance in Andrews Woods and along the Atlantic Path

Date: Saturday April 24th (following official Earth Day on the 22nd)

Meeting Place: Back yard of 94 Phillips Ave., adjacent to Andrews Woods

Instructions: Bring gloves, rakes, clippers, cutters, and trimmers of any sort. For kids, small rakes are ideal. Trash bags and water will be provided.

Andy Martinez and Silent Auction

Join us at this month's General Meeting on April 21st for a talk by photographer Andy Martinez. For more than 40 years, Andrew Martinez has been diving in New England waters. His work has been published in most nature, travel, and dive magazines in this country and in many other countries. His book Marine Life of the North Atlantic is considered the best guide to this region

Andy will introduce you to the world beneath the waters of Indonesia's Lembeh Strait . This narrow body of water in northern Sulawesi, is home to many odd and fascinating creatures that have adapted to living in the loose volcanic sand. Featured in this presentation will be the interesting behaviors, interrelationships, and natural history of the creatures of Lembeh. Also you will see some images of Buyat, a new diving destination in Indonesia.

Also at the meeting we will kicking off a program of silent auctions to benefit the club. The first item will be up for bidding at the meeting. It is a Boat dive charter donated by Boston Harbor Diving Company. The charters normally run for $80, and bidding starts at $40. You must be present to bid and win.

The March General meeting will feature a behind the scenes tour of the Aquarium by Bill Murphy, the dive club liaison.

Pre-Sea Rovers Dinner at Jose McIntire's - 3/6/10 We are continuing our tradition of having a get-together dinner before the Sea Rovers Film Festival. Join us at Jose McIntire's before heading over to the IMAX theater.
NEADC Ski Trip - 3/19-21/10 - Join the dive club on a trip to Mount Snow in Vermont on March 19-21. There are several condo-style rooms available for various occupancies and rates. Contact Al Bozza for more info
NEADC Whale Watch - 4/11/10 We've scheduled this trip for early spring because it's the best time for whale encounters. We will be onboard the Voyager 3 for a day of seeking the great Rights, Humpbacks and Atlantic White-sided Dolphins on Stellwagen Bank. Voyager 3 is the whale watch vessel of the New England Aquarium and is crewed by knowledgeable and enthusiastic naturalists who will identify and provide information on the species we will see. Tickets are $35 for adults and $26.50 for children (under 18)- children must be at least 3 years old and 30" tall) and must be paid with reservation.
White Water Rafting - 5/8/10 We will be rafting on the Deerfield River (Fife Brook Section) for the NEADC White Water Rafting Trip. This beautiful ten mile trip through mild whitewater is the perfect outing for families and friends. Bring your family and friends on this trip for the perfect introduction to whitewater rafting. This all day trip costs $57 per person-includes all taxes, wetsuit, helmet, and a great riverside lunch.

Intro to Rebreathers

On Saturday, January 9, Dan Crowell and Rick Marshall will offer an Intro to Rebreathers - this is your chance to learn about rebreathers and an opportunity to try one out!

Many divers are under the impression that rebreathers are reserved for deep divers, tech or military divers only. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Rebreathers are just another way of doing what regular scuba does, but in a much more efficient manner. Imagine never having to haul huge tanks down to the dive shop for fills or down a long dock to the dive boat. How about never having to figure out the best nitrox mix for a dive because no matter where you go you’ll always have the perfect mix. Or, how about doing a dive to 60 ft. for three hours with nothing more than what’s on your back, and no deco obligation! The reality is rebreathers offer the greatest benefits at recreational depths than at any other level.

The fees are to help defer the cost of the room, pool time, and consumables. We'll have five rebreathers available, including the Evolution, Inspiration (Classic and Vision), rEvo and KISS.

You need to bring: Your mask, fins (booties if needed), bathing suit and a towel. A shorty or 3 mm wetsuit is ok, but please bring a weight belt if doing so. The pool is heated, so even a bathing suit and t-shirt should be fine for the time you'll be in the pool.

Cotting School news

The NEADC is starting our campaign to help the Cotting School with one of their programs. They have a program where they introduce students into the business environment and help prepare them for work positions outside the school-- by marketing and selling books on line. This also gets them involved in the packaging and shipping of these books. We would like to ask our members if they have any books they would like to donate to the school to contact Al Bozza and he will make arrangements to pick up and deliver them to the school.

Also, one of the Cotting School staff is participating in a fund-raising marathon in Florida and is in need of financial help. If you can help in this worthy cause please email Al directly--even a small donation helps.

Lobstering regs and application

It's not the season to catch the Lobsters, but you can start thinking about getting/renewing your license. There are a lot of restrictions aimed at making sure there continue to be lobsters for the next few years, and it can get confusing. There is a new guide on the Department of Marine Fisheries website for non-commercial lobster and crab fishing, including harvest by divers.

A few weeks ago, the Boston Pheonix featured an article about unsustainable fishing practices and an interview with New England native and National Geographic photographer Brian Skerry. It's an interesting read:

We're Killing the Oceans.

"You take a net, and you scrape it along the bottom to catch shrimp. In the process, everything else — all the little stuff that lives on the bottom, the sponges and the coral and all the habitat for baby animals — you wipe all that out. To catch one pound of shrimp, we might kill 12 pounds of other animals that get thrown back into the sea [dead] as by-catch.

"If we did that on land — to catch a single deer you go through the forest and kill all the raccoons and squirrels and skunks and everything that lives there — people would be outraged. Yet you can do it in the ocean and nobody cares."

Edward Von der Porten FN'80 - "The Galleon San Felipe."
Mr. Von der Porten shares the saga of the galleon San Felipe through eight Mexican - U.S. expeditions along the desert shore of Baja California to discover and reconstruct the tragic fate of the Spanish galleon San Felipe, lost without trace in 1576 with a treasure of Ming porcelain.

Dr. Charles E. Rawlings FN'90 - "Portraits of Living Mollusks."
Dr. Rawlings has written multiple articles concerning mollusks, photographed several species never photographed alive and won awards for his living shell photography. As the underwater world deteriorates, Dr. Rawlings will be discussing the importance in documenting these wondrous living organisms in an attempt to educate the public about the splendors of the underwater world.

Ty Sawyer FN'02 - "How to Save the Seas."
Mr. Sawyer is the Editorial Director of ISLANDS magazine and the Bonnier Dive Group, which includes, Sport Diver, Scuba Diver and the Undersea Journal. He has been on dozens undersea exploratory adventures. Mr. Sawyer is also a frequent on the Travel Channel.

David W. Jourdan FN'04 - "Never Forgotten - The Search and Discovery of Israel's Lost Submarine Dakar."
Just after midnight on January 25, 1968, the Israeli Navy's newly commissioned submarine Dakar transmitted her last communication before she disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea without a trace. Author Mr. Jourdan will take us on his deep sea search for the missing 287-foot submarine and her sixty-nine officers and crew.

Jill Heinerth - "Into the Planet Using Closed Circuit Rebreathers." As a pioneer in the use of closed-circuit rebreathers, Ms. Heinerth will share her experiences exploring caves inside Antarctic icebergs, volcanoes and karst terrain around the world. An award-winning filmmaker, Ms. Heinerth co-wrote, produced, and appeared in Water's Journey, the PBS documentary series that takes viewers on travels through the world's greatest water systems.

Dr. Gregory Skomal - "Ocean Travelers: Tracking the World's Biggest Sharks."
Dr. Skomal is an accomplished marine biologist, underwater explorer, photographer, aquarist, and author. He currently heads up the Massachusetts Shark Research Program. Dr. Skomal will highlight the ecology and life history of the world's largest sharks with new technologies to examine the migrations of basking, Greenland, great white, porbeagle, and whale sharks.

The American lobster conjures up images of a boiled delicacy with drawn butter on your dinner plate, yet there is much more to know about these animals. The Aquarium’s Lobster Research and Rearing Facility has focused on raising, caring for and studying the early life stages of this iconic animal. Learn about lobster life history and the ups and downs of raising these animals. Current research on lobster shell disease and its impact on the animal and the fishery will also be discussed.

Because this is a Lowell Lecture, we ask that all attendees preregister through their site so there are enough chairs.
